Many thanks to "Catherine from Oz," who commented yesterday and shared a URL where many more portraits by the artist Elena Gaussen can be found--including two portraits of Helene Hanff* that I'd never seen (and the credit for photographing these beautiful portraits goes to Penny Young-Meyer). Thanks, Catherine! I'm glad someone out there knows how to use this fancy thing called "the Internet." (And thank you, Penny!)
In other news, today is the first day I'll be posting over at BookNinja, although actually we got started yesterday, because evidently we're all go-getters. Except, oh yeah, I'm not a go-getter. I have a feeling I'm out of my depth around the other bloggers, who seem very up on book news (and also know their way around the Internet, as several of them have referenced their RSS feeds, which I am personally too lazy to set up). So wish me luck.
*My favorite is the portrait of her in her home office, surrounded by books.

I live in London and have had the pleasure of photographing many of Elena Gaussen's paintings - and have seen in person some of Helene Hanff.
Elena has a website where you could contact her directly, I am certain she'd be delighted to hear of your interest. She also has some very interesting stories of her meetings with Helene.

Ah -- should have looked at the link you posted, those are my photographs of Elena's paintings. You may still want to contact her, she may have others lurking around. I do know she painted a few. Cheers!

Dear Penny:
Thank you so much for photographing those paintings so others could see them! And thank you for the link. I must confess I never thought of contacting Elena Gaussen (I'm too starstruck) but I might just have to, just to say thanks for her artwork and for her attention to Hanff.
I've fixed the above entry to try and give you your proper due for photographing these portraits--I'm sorry I didn't do that sooner. Thank you so much for commenting!

You are very welcome. I know Elena personally and I can honestly say that she would be thrilled to have you contact her. It would probably just make her day! Last I saw her she was still painting beautiful paintings!

I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.
