Glad to learn he wasn't a closet jerk. I was never a huge fan, but he always seemed more decent than Hollywood deserved.

Robert Brown

"Come on. That's funny."

Yes it is.

I suppose I'd have thought it funnier had I seen the movie, but I'm familiar with the line (as who is not, as he acknowledges). I hope I'm as good-natured when I contract some horrible disease.

It's all well and good to say "Well, you have to laugh," but in reality: no, you don't. You can be mean and nasty and cruel if you want, and I wouldn't hold it against you if you were. I hope no one would hold it against me, as I would probably be even more extremely unpleasant in that situation.

But I'll hope anyway that I'll be more gently disposed toward a horrible lingering death, and have mu own quips at the ready:

"well, it hurts, but it beats retail."

"I'm sorry Bert, I can't hear you, I have a tumor in my brain."

That sort of thing, perhaps.

It IS funny. I will never have this much class when dealing with a terminal illness. Who am I kidding? I don't have this much class now.

I often wondered if my "well, if it happens, it happens" attitude about death was a result of my many years working in retail, as a matter of fact, so I LOVE your line.

And, here you go, although you really must watch ALL of Dirty Dancing (I'm going to watch both Red Dawn and Ghost, soonish, I think--I've never seen either):
